ASITA Calls on New Tourism Minister to Focus on More than Merely Bali in Constructing Tourism Policies
The chairman of the Riau branch of the Association of Indonesian Tours and Travel Agencies (ASITA-Riau), Ibnu Masud, has reminded the newly appointed Indonesian Minister of Tourism, Arief Yahya, to focus on more than the narrow interests of Bali tourism in addressing his new responsibilities.
Quoted by the State News Agency Antara, Ibnu Masud said: “The Tourism Ministry should not only focus on Bali. This is because Bali is already famous and there is concern that the market (for Bali) has become over-saturated.” For this reason, Ibnu Masud is calling on the new Minister to urgently create new destinations beyond Bali. He added, that ASITA hoped Yahya would introduce new policies on tourism planning.
He complained that in the past the Central Government has failed to adequately involve experienced tourism professionals in their deliberations on tourism policy. A closer working relationship between the public and private sectors will, he contends, help increase both the number of foreign tourism visitors to Indonesia as well as stimulate domestic tourism flows.
