President Joko Widodo Picks Telkom CEO to be Indonesia’s Tourism Czar
Indonesia’s new Tourism Minister has been sworn in replacing Mari Elka Pangestu in the job of leading the archipelago’s economically important tourism sector. The 53-year old Arief Yahya leaves the role as CEO of the State-owned Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom). Promoted as CEO at Telkom in 2012, Yahya joined the communications giant in 2005 serving as enterprise and wholesale director.
Graduating as an electrical engineer from Indonesia’s prestigious Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB-Bandung), he immediately joined Telkom where he completed a company-sponsored Master Degree program in telematics engineering from Surrey University in England. Yahya was born on March 2, 1961 in Banyuwangi, East Java.
The new Tourism Minister claims his personal mantra is “Success without a plan is luck. Success with a plan is achievement.” Largely unknown in Indonesian tourism circles, many are eager to hear Yahya’s action steps to materialize the new President’s ambitious plans to double the number of foreign tourist to Indonesia over the coming 5 years.
