Farmers and cattle breeders dominate West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) haj pilgrims every year, suggesting that the development of the agricultural sector in the province is quite successful, an official has said. Head of the haj and minor haj section at the provincial religious affairs office Ma’ad Umar said on Thursday that 1,738 of the province’s haj pilgrims in 2012 were farmers or cattle breeders.
“Of the haj pilgrims from East Lombok District 518, a majority, were farmers, with 332 from Central Lombok, while mostly cattle breeders, 347, performed the pilgrimage from Sumbawa,” he said as quoted by Antara news agency. He said the haj pilgrims from East Lombok and Central Lombok districts were mostly tobacco farmers. Normally, the number of pilgrims registering for the haj in the two areas increases when tobacco harvests are good and prices are high. Similarly, the number of haj pilgrims in Sumbawa increased when beef prices were high, Umar said.
