Environment Minister Balthasar Kambuaya plans to propose that Nyepi, the Hindu Day of Silence, be a national event, as part of the ministry’s plans to save energy. “Nyepi will be good for the environment and for energy-saving programs since no cars or other means of transportation are allowed to operate,” the minister said.
He further said that the Indonesian people must learn the importance of the Balinese religious wisdom of Nyepi. “It has the utmost religious purpose of having people refrain from negative acts, while at the same time it will also serve as a day when all people are prohibited from activities — meaning less usage of various energy sources,” the minister explained. Kambuaya is calling on the Indonesian people to propose Nyepi as national activity.
