Detectives with South Denpasar Police arrested three suspects, who were allegedly burglarizing houses while posing as local youths collecting donations for ogoh-ogoh (giant papier-mâché figures). The figures will be paraded on the night before Nyepi in early March and local youths collecting donations door-to-door to build ogoh-ogoh is a common sight here. The suspects were identified as I Made Satya Darmawan aka Doglir, 26, Slamet Pramono, 35, and I Wayan Pardita aka Pak Arik, 36. Doglir confessed that he was the leader of the gang.
The gang had burglarized at least 15 houses in Panjer and Sidakarya areas. Last year, the gang successfully carried out their operation by posing as local youths collecting donations for kite construction. This year they tried a similar approach. They knocked on the door of the house and when somebody answered the door they would ask for a donation. When nobody answered the door they would simply burglarize the empty house.
